Advantages of gate valves
(1) The fluid resistance is small because the internal medium channel of the gate valve body is straight, and the flow direction of the medium does not change when passing through the gate valve, so the fluid resistance is small.
(2) The opening and closing torque is small, making it easier to open and close because the movement direction of the gate plate is perpendicular to the flow direction of the medium when the gate valve is opened and closed. Compared with the globe valve, the opening and closing of the gate valve is more labor-saving.
(3) The flow direction of the medium is unrestricted, without disturbing or reducing pressure. The medium can flow in any direction from both sides of the gate valve, and can achieve the purpose of use. It is more suitable for pipelines where the flow direction of the medium may change.
(4) The structural length is shorter because the gate plate of the gate valve is vertically placed inside the valve body, while the stop valve disc is horizontally placed inside the valve body, resulting in a shorter structural length than the stop valve.
(5) Good sealing performance. When fully opened, the sealing surface is less susceptible to erosion.
(6) When fully open, the sealing surface is less eroded by the working medium than the shut-off valve.
(7) The body shape is relatively simple, the casting process is good, and the application range is wide.
Disadvantages of gate valves
(1) The sealing surface is prone to damage. When opening and closing, there is relative friction between the two seals that come into contact with the valve seat, which can easily damage and affect the sealing component's performance and service life. Maintenance is relatively difficult.
(2) Due to the long opening and closing time and high height, the gate valve must be fully opened or closed during opening and closing, and the large stroke of the gate plate requires a certain amount of space for opening. The overall size is high, and the installation space is large.
(3) Gate valves with complex structures generally have two sealing surfaces, which add some to processing, grinding, and maintenance. There are many difficult parts, making manufacturing and maintenance more difficult, and the cost is higher than that of globe valves.
Under certain working conditions in certain departments (such as oil pipelines in the petroleum department), it is not allowed to use valves with diameter shrinkage. On the one hand, this is to reduce the resistance loss of the pipeline, and on the other hand, to avoid obstacles caused by mechanical cleaning of the pipeline after the diameter shrinkage.
